7th June-PTMC Junior Cameron Davies seals Works Drive
Chevrolet to make British Rally debut with new Spark
Teenage rallying sensation Cameron Davies is about to make motorsport history by becoming the youngest ever works-supported rally driver, campaigning a Chevrolet-backed Spark in the Formula 1000 Junior rally championship.
The 16-year old, from Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, is the series’ reigning champion, and is widely tipped to become Britain’s next rallying great.
Cameron’s car, and Chevrolet’s involvement, were revealed at the British Touring Car Championship round at Oulton Park, Cheshire, the closest BTCC circuit to Cameron’s home. The car was rally-prepared and developed by rallying specialists XS Racing.
“I’m absolutely bowled over by the fact I’ve got manufacturer support,” said Cameron. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I just can’t wait to drive it properly.”
But Cameron will have to wait a short while before he can compete in anger, not because of the car, but because he has to finish his GCSEs! The year 11 student at Ysgol Pantycelyn, Llandovery, had a Maths exam immediately after the car’s unveil…
The Spark’s first outing will be on June 24 at Caerwent, near Newport, once Cameron’s exams are out of the way. After his GCSEs, Cameron wants to do an Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence, focusing on developing his rally career.
“I’m thrilled to be fighting out the championship in the Spark,” he added. “It makes a perfect Formula 1000 car, as it’s relatively powerful for its size and has the right kind of handling for rallying. I’d love to take a championship title in it as this is my final year in juniors before moving up to something bigger.”
Cameron will be partnered by 22-year old co-driver Chris Williams from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, in the series, which is aimed drivers aged between 14 and 16. The regulations stipulate that the car must be mechanically standard and of 1.0-litre displacement, with only minor modifications allowed to the brakes, suspension and exhaust system.
In total, drivers can compete in nine out of 13 events across England and Wales, with the best seven finishes counting towards the championship.
Chevrolet UK Managing Director Mark Terry commented: “I’m delighted that Cameron will be driving the Formula 1000 Junior Spark. Chevrolet has a proud motorsport heritage, and is also a brand that consistently promotes and encourages talented youth, so it’s a natural fit. We’ll be following his progress closely, and wish him every success.”
Fans can track Cameron’s success via the Chevrolet UK Facebook site, while more information about the series can be found at http://www.formula1000.co.uk

29/30th November - Ilfracombe Rally/Blyton Hall Trophy
The success in the 2010 rally championship world continues for Port Talbot Motor Club, with one of the long established members becoming the first Welsh driver to win the Association of South Western Motor Clubs Road Rally Championship 2010 for some thirty five years !
Nigel Phillips took his Proton Compact rally car to an impressive and consistent string of results over the eight championship rounds at numerous locations around the South coast of England and the West Country, competing against rally crews with detailed knowledge and experience of roads local to themselves, where-as Nigel was making regular treks eastward across the Severn Bridge into rally country that was entirely new to him, although he was aided all season by navigator Tom Jefferies of Taunton.
Nigel took the drivers title, and Tom the navigators championship win, the rallies based variously at Plymouth, Devizes, Exeter, Exmouth, Taunton, Bournemouth, Torbay, and finally a very icy event in the Ilfracombe region across the Severn Estuary. Scores from six of those eight events could be counted, the championship duo securing a first and second overall and six further good results in the top ten of each event, the title battle going down to the very last round of the 2010, so intense was the contest for series honours.
The Proton performed reliably and perfectly for the season, prepared and maintained by Mike Morgan Rallying of Glyn-Neath, for whom Nigel and Tom have nothing but praise, that and the double ASWMC championship win making the long journeys to and from distant locations – and the Severn Bridge toll on every event – worthwhile !
The victory certainly shows that Port Talbot Motor Club has strength across the age groups in rallying, and with the older drivers – and co-drivers and navigators – able to pass on the knowledge they have gained over the years, allied to the enthusiasm and commitment of younger competitors, the club looks to have a formula for continued success.
Gareth Short & Gareth Yelland were competing on the Blyton Hall Trophy Rally and managed to finish 4th O/All and 12th O/All respectively in the Junior Championship, despite the snowy weather that weekend.

I think that this is the first event for Steve in a very long time.

Glyn Price/Dylan Jenkins, last years Breidden rally winners had a medicore run, finishing 6th O/All, losing a little too much time with a steady start to the event. Dai Loyd / Matthew Tucker - Neath Valley Stages
7th/8th August - Barcud Rally
A cracking night in the lanes around Tregaron & Lampeter was had by Adrian Jones/Dylan Jenkins on the Barcud Rally, leading at Petrol and continuing to the finish with 1st O/All. Adrian Jones/Dylan Jenkins - 1st O/All, Barcud Rally.

A fabulous result for Dale/Marc Clatworthy on the 1000 lanes this weekend, bringing the 1000cc Micra back to the finish in 9th O/all, winning class 2 and also the 1st under 1400cc. It also promotes them to the relms of calass 1 now! Not so lucky were Robert Wilson/Dylan Jenkins with the engine expiring after taking in a load of water in the ford at coelbren woods. A shame, as they were 2nd O/All going into the night leg, just 9secs shy of the leader. Nigel Phillips/Tom Jeffries also had a bad night, picking up 2 fails for booking into a time control early, costing them a potential 10th O/All.
15th May - Plains Rally / TSH Stages
Damian Thomas failed to finish the Plains rally, when the engine blew on stage 3. An encouraging start was made though, with a 2nd fastest time in class on stage 2. Mark Ellis made it another top 3 finish on the TSH stages with a 3rd O/All and 1st in class, against the more powerful cars on the event. Not such a good day for Cameron Davies/Gareth Yelland in the F1000 Junior championship as they went off and damaged the front end of the car consideably. They were on the pace at the time of the off, so will need to get the car fixed in time for the next championship event.
